After the stormPosted by Sandrine (Cincinnati, United States) on 10 March 2008 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio. Yesterday we had a level 3 emergency storm... A lot of snow... My tradition is to go for a walk after at night, I love it! Thanks for stopping by! I love to hear any of your thoughts...

My First thoughts were to have stopped down to get star pattern lights, but after looking the open aperture works well here. Good goin'. 23 Mar 2008 11:47pm @Dang: How do you get those star patterns? Dang from Marietta, United StatesSorry for the slow response, see if this makes sense. In this shot, you've used an open aperture of f/3.5. By stopping down to f/8 or more, the smaller opening will give you a star pattern on the lights instead. The number of points will be determined by the amount of blades in the diaphragm assembly. Most better quality lenses have more (possibly to help bokeh), but usual blade numbers are 5, 6, or 8. You can cheat, of course, and buy star filters... but they usually soften the overall photo, and can add additional flair which can be less desirable. Good rule when shooting night shots is to carry a tripod, and shoot with manual, or aperture priority as opposed to depending on IS or other anti-shake ability while hand holding. Hope this makes more sense,. I still like the effect here, the feeling is different with the smooth glows. 7 Apr 2008 5:51am |
